Northlands believes participation and achievement in sport plays a vital role in the education and development of the individual, encouraging team spirit, altruism, sportsmanship, leadership and physical development.
A learner who seizes the opportunities in this sphere of school life will feel the benefit in all other areas, while establishing a lifelong pattern of healthy competition and physical fitness, encouraging them to excel in their individual area of expertise.
The Northlands High Performance Programme is an elite sporting programme that is built into the Northlands academic timetable and is available for the following sports:
A variation of netball, played exclusively indoors, in which the playing court is surrounded on each side and overhead by a net. The net prevents the ball from leaving the court, reducing the number of playing stoppages. This gives indoor netball a faster pace than netball.
Athletics is a group of sporting events that involves competitive running, jumping, throwing, and walking. The most common types of athletics competitions are track and field, road running, cross country running.
Five players on a team, opposing one another on a rectangular court, compete with the primary objective of shooting a basketball through the defender's hoop.
A sport that requires physical exertion as mental exertion manifests itself physically. It has rules and etiquette, which are officially recognized internationally. Chess is competitive as the participating players feel the drive to win.
Teams and individuals run a race on open-air courses over natural terrain such as dirt or grass. Does your level of stamina have what it takes?
Indoor & Outdoor Hockey
Indoor hockey is played on a smaller area and between smaller teams than field hockey and the sidelines are replaced by solid barriers from which the ball rebounds and remains in play. The outdoor game played by two opposing teams of 11 players.
Netball has the following advantages: true team sport (no ball hogs allowed), doesn’t matter size/ability level a position on court for everyone, great hand/eye coordination and teaches awareness.
15s & 7s Touch Rugby
7s are made up of seven players playing seven-minute halves, then there’s the usual 15s, where players play 40-minute halves. We have a proud history of provincial rugby players.
Commonly known as Football or Soccer. It is played between 2 teams of 11 players. It’s played by 250 million players across the world, making it the world’s most popular sport.
A game similar to baseball played with a larger ball.
Swimming is an individual or team racing sport that requires the use of one's entire body to move through water.
Touch works by the same rules as contact rugby, without the contact. Creating a safer playing experience while remaining competitive.
A game played by two teams, usually of six players on a side, in which the players use their hands to bat a ball back and forth over a high net.
