KwaZulu-Natal.

The story began on 11 October 1949, when Durban North High School – the first secondary school in the area – officially opened its doors. Under the leadership of Principal George Armstrong, the school welcomed its first cohort of 215 boys and girls to a brand-new campus.

By 1953, the Department of Education made the decision to separate boys’ and girls’ education. The school was formally divided, and Netta Manning was appointed the first principal of the newly established Northlands Girls’ High School. While construction of the boys’ school was still underway in nearby Kensington Drive, the original school building was temporarily shared: the boys occupied the upper floor, and the girls, the lower.

A defining moment in the school’s history occurred on 1 October 1953, when the boys, led by Headmaster Percy Hardaker, marched to their new campus – Northlands Boys’ High School – as the girls lined the route to bid them farewell.

In the decades that followed, Northlands Girls’ High School experienced remarkable growth and development. In 1962, the school was expanded with the addition of a hall, gymnasium, home economics department, new science laboratories, and additional classrooms. A year later, in 1971, parents were invited to contribute towards a swimming pool fund, and on 7 October 1972, the pool was officially opened.

By the end of 1976, the campus had grown significantly, with the completion of a tuck shop, team-teach room, updated biology and science labs, an art room, new classrooms, a gallery extension to the hall, a pavilion, and a new tennis court.

Since those early days, Northlands Girls’ High School has continued to evolve – from its modest beginnings into one of KwaZulu-Natal’s leading girls’ schools, respected throughout South Africa for its academic excellence, strong values, and holistic approach to education.

Past Principals of NGHS

Northlands Girls’ High School has been shaped by a legacy of strong and visionary leadership:

Netta K.
