Connecting with NGHS Alumae

Northlands Girls’ High School is proud to reconnect with Ria Sookraj, whose musical journey continues to inspire. During her time at NGHS (Class of 2022), Ria made a lasting impact as a member of the KZN Youth Orchestra, while also serving as Instrumental Ensemble Captain and Executive Portfolio Leader of Culture.
Ria recently shared the story behind her passion for music:
“I began my journey as a violinist at just five years old, training under Romanian and Bulgarian teachers who instilled a strong classical foundation and discipline from an early age. After completing my ABRSM exams, I not only grew technically but also developed a deep emotional connection to the instrument.
After school, I transitioned into performing professionally, turning my passion into something I could share with others. While currently pursuing my law degree, I perform part-time at weddings, birthdays, and proposals, with regular weekly performances that continue to refine my artistry and stage presence.
One of my career highlights was being the opening act for Vidya Vox at the Suncoast Globe Theatre, a moment that truly affirmed my growth as a performer. Over time, my style has evolved to include a blend of English and Bollywood music, allowing me to fuse classical training with modern and cultural influences to connect with diverse audiences.
Music has always been my passion, my escape, and a core part of who I am. I truly can’t imagine my life without it.”
Ria’s journey is a beautiful reflection of dedication, talent, and the power of pursuing one’s passion. NGHS celebrates her achievements and looks forward to all that lies ahead in her remarkable story.
